About This Project

Mark continues to bring together brilliant musicians and diverse, innovative programs. His Generations album was nominated for Best Independent Jazz Album by the Australian Independent Record Association, while Convergence was awarded Best Jazz CD by the Indie Acoustic Project in the USA.

For this concert, the quintet features the beautiful combination of tenor saxophone and trombone, with well known trombonist James Kennedy. James and Mark’s musical friendship stretches back to their undergraduate days at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. They have performed together many times over the years, and it is a pleasure to be sharing the stage again. Both have also been exploring effects pedal boards with their instruments, bringing new sonic colours and textures to the music.

The repertoire will feature new compositions by Mark and pianist Ryan Grogan, alongside music from the band’s evolving repertoire.

The concert will also pay tribute to the late artist John Gilfillan, whose beautiful painting of Mark and his “things” features in our publicity. John entered the work in the 2023 Archibald Prize. We are delighted to honour his creativity and friendship through this concert.
